How to Learn Tarot: A Beginner’s Guide
Learning tarot isn’t about memorizing a list of keywords or trying to “predict the future.” It’s about creating a relationship with the cards, your intuition, and your inner voice. Tarot is a mirror — reflecting back the patterns, feelings, and truths already alive inside of you.
Whether you’ve just bought your first deck or you’ve been pulling cards for years but still feel unsure, you’re not alone. So many of us start with curiosity and excitement, only to hit a wall of overwhelm: What do these 78 cards mean? Am I doing this right? Will I ever feel confident reading without the guidebook?
If you’ve ever felt that way, this post is for you. And if you’re ready to take your practice deeper with support and structure, that’s exactly why I created Tarot School.
Why Learn Tarot?
Tarot has been a companion for centuries, but more than ever it’s becoming a tool for personal growth and mental health. Here’s what tarot can offer you:
Self-reflection: Tarot helps you slow down, step back, and see what’s really happening in your thoughts, emotions, and patterns.
Mindfulness: Pulling a card daily or weekly becomes a ritual of presence.
Intuition: Over time, you stop second-guessing yourself and start trusting your inner knowing.
Support for healing: Tarot can guide journaling, meditation, and other practices that support your mental health.
Tarot isn’t about fortune-telling. It’s about connecting with yourself in a way that feels grounding, honest, and empowering.
Common Struggles When Starting
If you’ve ever tried to teach yourself tarot, you might already know these challenges:
78 cards = overwhelm. The major arcana, the suits, the numbers… it can feel like too much to learn all at once.
Relying too much on the guidebook. Pulling a card and immediately flipping to the little white book leaves you disconnected from your intuition.
Feeling “wrong.” So many new readers fear misinterpreting a card, or they freeze up when their reading doesn’t feel perfect.
Inconsistent practice. Starting strong but then forgetting to pull cards for weeks at a time.
Trust me, I’ve been there. I know how intimidating tarot can feel at first, and that’s why I wanted to create a gentler, more supportive way to learn.
How to Start Learning Tarot
If you’re just beginning, here’s a simple step-by-step way to start building confidence:
Begin with the Major Arcana. These 22 cards are the big archetypes and themes. Learning them first gives you a strong foundation.
Pull a card a day. Don’t worry about “getting it right.” Simply notice what the image makes you feel, and jot down a few reflections in your journal.
Practice simple spreads. Start with a one-card pull, then move to 3-card spreads like Past / Present / Future or Mind / Body / Spirit.
Journal your interpretations. Writing helps you process the symbolism and build your personal connection.
Read for yourself first. Once you feel more comfortable, try reading for friends. It doesn’t have to be formal — it’s about sharing insight.
This slow and steady approach is much more sustainable than trying to cram all 78 meanings into your head at once.
